Intro
In 2005 the San Francisco-based art collective, Rebar discovered that while feeding the meter of a parking space they where free to use the space as they liked. With a little grass, a few trees and a park bench, Rebar re-imagined the space they had rented. The project has since captured the imagination of artist, activists and designers the world over. On the 19th of September PARK(ing) Day Returns to change the face of our urban space.
Reverse Park
When is a park not a park?
Converting the vacant car parking space into a virtual green space. Reverse Park is an ironic exercise in environmental and social commentary.
It's not a park, but what if it was? Would its shade and soft grass offer a place to sit? Would it encourage pedestrian traffic, boosting local economy? In turn, would it decrease the use of automobiles, in which case what effect would it have on our environment?
